REDACTED

Filling In the Gaps

The Elevator Pitch

REDACTED is an art piece that utilizes user generated content to extract meaning from sections of FBI and CIA documents that have been removed.
By registering, you act as an "Agent" tasked with "filling in the gaps." That is, upon registration, users can input text into specific areas of a document where information has been blacked out by the government due to national security concerns. Redacted will ultimately be shown in two parts:

  • An online gallery of text of "Agent" submissions.
  • A series of physical prints created by Pravin Sathe to be displayed in a gallery setting.

REDACTED homepage
Img 1 - REDACTED homepage
The REDACTED proposal image shown to the left (Img. 1) is the design of the potential homepage. New users can register, or existing users can login to begin editing documents where information has been redacted.

The second image for the REDACTED piece is the actual document editor page (Img. 2). Here users, upon login can fill in the spaces where portions of the text have been redacted. These changes are then saved to the database. "Agents" can access each others edits but cannot make changes. Each "Agent" is assigned his/her own copy of the document.

Sample #2: How You See It screengrabs
How You See It homepage
Img 3 - How You See It homepage
How You See It layers a single story as told by three different stations (CBS, NBC and ABC). The online gallery for the videos was created using a php, MySQL backend and a css, xhtml and javascript front end (Img. 3). When new pieces are created for the series or the information about the older pieces needs to be edited a custom content management system easily allows for the updating of information.

Sample #3: G.O.A.T
G.O.A.T.

Img. 4 is the "Greatest M.C. of All Time", a layering of Jay-Z, Tupac and Biggie Smalls. Data for the "G.O.A.T." series was culled from online polls and quotes. (Img. 4)
