The Darkest Light

Rapid Prototyping at Home

Rapid prototyping has brought the ability to quickly mockup objects for commerical sale. The future, as a recent NY Times article described, might have a consumer buy a blueprint for the good they wish to purchase, which when fed through their own 3D printer would produce the final object.

But what of art? The MoMA design store sells a modular lamp that could easily be produced through rapid prototyping. Proxyarch explores the artistic process of rapid prototyping, cnc and milling. Their most beautiful example might be an entry into the Muji design competition: a foldable recycling bin.

Using these previous examples and incorporating inspiration from the works of The Darkest Light is a modular structure that was developed to display a "natural" form through an algorythmic, machine generated process. Using Maya, Rhino, Z-Corp's rapid prototyping printer and a laser cutter/etcher at New York University's Advanced Media Studio, The Darkest Light is an assemblage of powder, glue and balsa wood. Construction was completed using Z-bond and super glue. Due to the modularity of the pieces, future installments of the The Darkest Light can be reconfigured to suit the owner.

The Darkest Light is a collaboration between Pravin Sathe and Yan Yan Cao.
